GRANVILLE, W.Va. The West Virginia Black Bears didn’t get their desired result Monday in their Major League Baseball Draft league debut, falling to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 8-1 at Monongalia County Ballpark.
What the Black Bears did get, however, was an opportunity to play for the first time in more than 600 days after covid forced the cancelation of the 2020 minor league baseball season. The franchise had previously been a member of the New York-Penn League, as was Mahoning Valley. Both organizations moved from the NYPL to the first-year MLB Draft League, which provides a showcase for players in advance of the annual MLB draft

Rochester, Minn. â Former Green Bay Bullfrog Hunter Owen, made his Major League debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, May 5, 2021. Owen is the 259
th former Northwoods League player to reach the Major League level.
Owen, who played collegiately at Indiana State University, played for the Green Bay Bullfrogs in 2016. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 25
th round of the 2016 MLB draft.
In 2016 with the Bullfrogs, Owen played in 11 games and hit .216 with a home run and four RBI. He stole three bases and scored three times.
Owen began his professional career in 2016 with the West Virginia Black Bears of the Short-Season A New York-Penn League. He played in 52 games with the Black Bears and hit .257 with five home runs, 10 doubles and two triples. He drove in 34 runs, stole four bases, and scored 31 times.

A former member of the Swift Current 57’s is nearing his Major League Baseball debut. Hunter Owen was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates to the MLB roster on Tuesday after four seasons in the club’s minor league system.
Owen, 27, was a 25th-round pick of the Pirates in the 2016 MLB Draft. The Evansville, IN native played for the Swift Current Indians in the Western Major Baseball League in the summer of 2014 after his freshman season at Indiana State University.
