Marching bands from Africa, Asia, South America and Europe will be coming to town for 2023 competition BUCKHANNON – More than 5,000 participants are expected to take part in the 2023 World Association of Marching Show Bands Championship in Buckhannon, West Virginia. During the May 4 Rotary Club of Buckhannon-Upshur meeting, Buckhannon City Recorder Randy Sanders talked about the preparations being made in anticipation of the event. “We have bands from Honduras, Congo, Brazil, Bahamas, Angola, Guatemala, Thailand, Poland, Colombia, El Salvador, Netherlands, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Ireland, Canada, Venezuela, Germany, Uruguay and Ecuador,” Sanders said. “I think there are four or five from Colombia alone, and the list goes on. We’re up to 29 bands right now, and we’re working across the country to secure some United States bands as well.”

BUCKHANNON West Virginia Wesleyan College held its 130th commencement ceremonies outdoors at Cebe Ross Field on Sunday morning. Dr. Patrice Harris, the first Black woman to serve as president of the American Medical Association and a West Virginia native, served as the keynote speaker. Harris grew up in Bluefield, West Virginia, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, a Master of Arts in counseling psychology and her medical degree all from West Virginia University. Harris has chaired the AMA Opioid Task Force since its creation in 2014.

Harris ELKINS Both Davis & Elkins College and West Virginia Wesleyan College will hold commencement ceremonies this weekend. D&E will host commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2021 at the Myles Center for the Arts Harper-McNeeley Auditorium today. The ceremonies will take place in three separate sessions divided by academic programs. The three sessions will be Nursing; Business, Education and Sport Science; and Creative Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. Each ceremony will include the awarding of diplomas to graduates, remarks from the highest-ranking graduates, D&E President Chris A. Wood and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Mark Barber, and a recorded message from Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco. Portions of the program have been pre-recorded.
