TALLAHASSEE – Florida Republican efforts to impose new limits on vote-by-mail and ballot drop boxes were positioned Tuesday for final votes in the state House and Senate, part of a GOP push to change election laws nationwide following the loss of the White House last fall.
The Senate Rules Committee approved a measure (SB 90) by Sen. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, limiting drop boxes to early voting sites during their open hours and requiring voters that want mail ballots to request them before every general election, beginning after next year’s contests.
A controversial signature match provision demanding that a pen-on-paper signature made within the past four years be reviewed by elections officials also endures. But Baxley said he was willing to revamp the proposal when the bill goes before the full Senate in coming days.

A challenger for the Gainesville City Commission seat that represents east Gainesville is the apparent winner after Tuesday night’s election, edging out the incumbent.
It was a close contest for the District 1 seat pitting two candidates who grew up in east Gainesville.
With all nine precincts reporting as well as all mail-in ballots and early votes counted, Desmon Duncan-Walker received 1,244 votes, or 52.5%, compared with 1,125 votes for Gigi Simmons, or 47.5%.
The results do not become final until Thursday at 5 p.m., when the Canvassing Board will meet at the Supervisor of Elections Office to certify the results. The board will canvass election returns, review bad signatures and provisional ballots issues along with any other evidence that could affect the election results.
LYNN HAVEN The mayoral seat that has been left vacant for more than 100 days after the former mayor Margo Anderson was indicted along with the former city manager, city attorney, and community services director on dozens of fraud charges involving the mishandling of federal emergency dollars in the early hours following Hurricane Michael, is now being vied for by three new faces to the Lynn Haven Commission, each promising to restore the integrity of what it means to hold public office. There definitely were some major problems, but much of that has been weeded out and we re looking toward a bright future for Lynn Haven, said mayoral candidate Joe Brown, who has more than 20 years in finance management in city and county government.
