Under the program, licensed behavioral health counselors or nurses make themselves readily available to law enforcement officers to peacefully resolve calls for service, involving mentally ill patients or the homeless. In some cases, specialists respond with deputies or police officers to 911 calls, provided there are no immediate risks to safety. We may be able to get to the subjects and triage the situation in the field, saving a lot of time, money and resources, Vrooman said. He acknowledged the goal is, whenever possible, to keep mentally ill individuals or chronic substance abusers from landing in the correctional system. The preference is to divert them into treatment centers or hospitals, if that level of care is truly needed.

Supervisors Give Okay to Restructure Dickinson County Attorney’s Office By charguth April 7, 2021 8:48 am Saga Communications Spirit Lake, IA (KICD)– The Dickinson County Attorney’s Office will be undergoing some restructuring after getting approval from the Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning. County Attorney Amy Zenor told the board the changes would involve eliminating a fairly new position to allow funding to go towards more help in working criminal cases. Zenor says the current layout with two attorneys is not nearly enough to handle the current workload coming into the courthouse. The idea behind the investigator position was to help law enforcement and finish looking into any cases that had not been completed, but Zenor says right now there is a greater need for prosecutors with Dickinson County having as many as one thousand criminal cases pending.
