Blue Shield is set to take over vaccine supply and distribution across the state after they secured a contract with the state to do so. For the county, this will happen on March 7th. Sonoma County Vaccine Chief Dr. Urmila Shende tried to ease concerns about the transition to Blue Shield but said there could be some problems.
Dr. Shende believes once this begins, the county will be receiving an increased supply of vaccines. Blue Shield has also told the county they would like to keep the current structure of vaccine clinics in place. In reviewing the plan to allow Blue Shield to take over vaccinations, Chair of the Board of Supervisors Lynda Hopkins said she was not happy about the county losing control, especially after all the work they’ve done in its distribution.
