The Technical Manager, Malaria Prevention position will work in close collaboration with the Senior Technical Manager-Malaria, project staff, and project partners in ensuring the delivery of quality malaria prevention and vector control interventions in line with objectives set forth in the Global Fund Malaria Grant, which support the National Malaria Control Strategy.

But malaria can be prevented with several interventions, including medications provided during
seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC). When the summer rain arrives, health workers supported by USAID through the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) treat children with four monthly rounds of SMC.
Research and previous experience show that it works. During the 2019 campaign, the PMI and USAID-supported Integrated Health Services Activity, led by Management Sciences for Health, treated more than 100,000 children below the age of five reducing malaria cases by
50 percent compared to the last two years in Malanville-Karimama and Tanguiéta-Matéri-Cobly, two of Benin’s health administration zones in Alibori and Atacora, respectively. Seeing this success, PMI and USAID partnered with the Global Fund, which supported treatments in Banikoara and Kandi-Gogounou-Ségbana, to cover all of Alibori this year.

Ever since the deadly parasite responsible for malaria was discovered in the late 19th century, science and global health experts have been waging a vigorous Sisyphean battle against the disease it causes. Humans have brought an arsenal of tools nets, rapid tests, medication to bear against the mosquito-borne parasite, which cannily mutates to become resistant to drug treatments. We’re holding our own: Global malaria deaths declined to 409,000 in 2019, compared to 585,000 in 2010, and a number of countries have eliminated it altogether or are on the verge of doing so.
