Stockbridge approves aquatic center intergovernmental agreement

Council approved the measure during the April 27 meeting. The $22 million county Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax project is set to be built at the Bridges at Jodeco development site inside city limits. The agreement will put the donation of the property, design, location, permitting authority, building inspections, certificate of occupancy, impact fee waivers and all operations of the aquatic center in the hands of the county. Additionally the county will be responsible for lighting, parking, landscaping and access roads. City Attorney Jeremy Berry, working with County Attorney Patrick Jaugstetter, said an indemnity clause was added to protect the city.

Special Photo  Henry County Manager Cherie Hobson-Matthews discusses the fiscal year 2022 budget with the Board of Commissioners Monday morning. McDONOUGH — It appears a suggested increase to the county’s millage rate may not happen due to lack of support from the Henry County Board of Commissioners. The proposed 1-mill increase, worth about $8 million, was recommended by county staff during the March 30 fiscal year 2022 budget workshop. A millage increase would result in higher property taxes. The rate increase could allow the county to accommodate all requests, largely for personnel, made by the public safety cluster, which includes Henry County Police, Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office.

Speer Road remains closed during repairs to failing pipes

STOCKBRIDGE – Speer Road will continue to be closed to traffic while repairs are made to the stormwater pipes underneath the roadway. Currently, the decades old metal pipes are being replaced with concrete culverts, including a three-barrel culvert in the center of the road for stormwater control. Earlier it was discovered that the metal pipes were in need of replacement and in danger of failing under the roadway. The road was closed in early January, but work has been delayed due to weather and necessary utility relocation. “Metal pipes eventually rust, so we are replacing with concrete, said SPLOST Transportation Director Roque Romero. “During an inspection, one of the pipes was discovered to be in poor shape, indicating the need to replace all of the older pipes.”

County moves forward with plans to build new judicial center

McDONOUGH — Henry County is one step closer to bringing its judicial functions under one roof. The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to allow the county manager to proceed with a request for proposals to build a new judicial center at 143 Henry Pkwy., also known as Red Hawk Park. The 19.5-acre tract of land will allow for the construction of a judicial complex, offering potentially 100,000 square feet of space per floor, a parking deck, sheriff’s administration space, inmate housing and room for future expansion. There are currently three court locations and nine court-related agencies spread out in different buildings throughout the county.
