The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Stephen Yakubu, has reiterated the government’s commitment to promote responsible and safe mining by ensuring that all mining companies comply with the mining laws of the country.
“We cannot allow you to operate as if there is no tomorrow; we must do all we can to ensure that mining activities are done in line with the law. I can assure you that I will insist that all mining companies in this region obey the laws,” he added.

The minister said this when he led members of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to Gbane in the Talensi District in the Upper East Region to inspect the activities of Shaanxi Mining Ghana Limited, a Chinese mining company which supports the Yenyeya and Pubortaaba Mining groups, two local small-scale mining entities in the area.
The Upper East Region Civil Society Organisations and Private Sector Actors in Agriculture Platform has called for institutional reforms to ensure that women’s access to land is considered a human rights issue.
The move would help facilitate and formulate the requisite strategies to address challenges facing women’s access to arable lands and other productive resources for farming purposes.
The call was contained in a seven-point Communique issued at the end of a Regional Stakeholder engagement forum held in Bolgatanga on Tuesday May, 11, 2021 on Women’s Access to Arable Land and Productive Resources for Farming in the Upper East Region.

The Paramount Chief of the Talensi Traditional Area in the Upper East Region, Tongraan Kugbilsong Nanlebegtang has called on residents of the Region to accord the newly appointed Regional Minister the opportunity to perform his duties peacefully.
According to him, the Region had a history of agitating against Regional Ministers mid-way in their tenure of office, which was partly to be blamed for the slow progress of development of the Region, “We are a Region noted for always calling for the removal of the Regional Minister.
“Whether it is NDC or NPP, every time, our Regional Minister must be removed mid-way of his term. I would like to appeal to you all to exercise some bit of restraint and ensure that you work with the Minister so that development can come to this Region.”

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has met stakeholders in the Upper East Region on the Environmental Impact Assessment and Resettlement Action Plan Reports for the proposed Pwalugu multipurpose dam.
The meeting, which took place at Bolgatanga, was to seek the inputs of stakeholders and address concerns to form the basis for the final document that will be acceptable to all stakeholders involved in the project.
