UTRCA-owned Perth County wetland recognized as protected and conserved area

Article content While it won’t have much impact on their efforts to maintain the area’s natural beauty, local conservationists and volunteers are celebrating the designation of a portion of Ellice Swamp as a Canadian Protected and Conserved Area. Located north of Stratford in the Township of Perth East, the 1,014-hectare swamp is the largest natural area in both Perth County and the Upper Thames River watershed. The approximately 882 hectares of the provincially significant wetland owned by the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is now recognized by both the provincial and federal recognition governments as protected following a rigorous evaluation process.
