The singer picked up seven accolades before the live portion of the show even began, claiming prizes such as Top Male Artist, Top R&B Artist, and Top R&B Album for After Hours, and he added a further three - including Top Artist - to his haul during the main ceremony. Late rapper Pop Smoke, who was killed in February 2020, was another big winner with five titles in the lead up to the event, earning Top New Artist, Top Rap Artist, and Top Rap Album for his posthumously-released debut, Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon.

ADVERTISEMENT DJ Khaled was up first with H.E.R. and Migos as they performed their track We Going Crazy in front of an outdoor audience live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The trio were joined by numerous trumpet players. Jonas then welcomed viewers and remarked on how better times are coming following the COVID-19 pandemic. Jonas said that the show would be taking place both indoors and out.

Pop Smoke, whose real name was Bashar Barakah Jackson, took home the Top New Artist, Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album and Top Rap Album for Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon. The posthumous honours were accepted by his mother Audrey Jackson, who took to the stage to make an emotional acceptance speech.

At another point, he made a joke after beginning with a slight show-of-religiosity fake-out. “I’d like to thank God… that I don’t have to wear that red suit anymore,” he said.
