The High Court today granted bail to a union parishad member in a case filed for gang-rape and torture of a woman in Noakhali s Begumganj in September last year.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order following a bail petition filed by the accused Moazzam Hossain alias Sohag Member .
Moazzem s lawyer Md Oziullah told The Daily Star that the HC granted bail to his client as he has been in Noakhali jail for three months although the maximum punishment for his alleged offence of negligence in discharging responsibility as a public representative is six months imprisonment.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today stayed a High Court verdict that in 2017 had declared illegal the annual readmission and session fees charged by English-medium schools.
The apex court, however, upheld a HC directive that asked English-medium schools to observe the national days in the manner of Bangalee culture with due respect and to introduce their students to the works and contributions of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, world famous poet Rabindranath Tagore, national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and other famous Bangalee personalities, Deputy Attorney General Samarendranath Biswas told The Daily Star.

Dhaka [Bangladesh], December 27 (ANI): Bangladesh Muktijuddha Mancha on Sunday held a protest rally at the foot of Raju sculpture adjacent to Teacher-Student Centre, University of Dhaka (TSC) against the killing of Karima Baloch, a Pakistani human rights activist in exile in Canada.
According to an official statement, Muktiyuddha Mancha, Central Committee President Aminul Islam Bulbul presided over the rally, which included Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, Former Justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, Sculptor Rasha, Poet Sardar Farooq, Dhaka University branch president Sonnet Mahmud, Dhaka Metropolitan North branch president Milon Dhali, general secretary Deen Islam Bappi and other leaders.
