Place North West | Green light for much-improved Trafford hotel

Dan Whelan Councillors praised Create Developments for the changes it made to a previously refused scheme and voted unanimously to approve the company’s plans for a 147-bedroom Hampton by Hilton hotel off Barton Road in Stretford.  Blackpool-based Create submitted scaled-back plans for a seven-storey hotel in December after Trafford Council’s planning committee had turned down a larger iteration of the scheme earlier in the year.   The original proposals mooted a nine-storey, 197-bedroom hotel, but the developer was forced back to the drawing board amid concerns over car parking provision and the scale of the scheme.  Create subsequently slashed the number of rooms by 50 and reduced the number of floors by two. The building’s footprint was also reduced, from 12,500 sq ft to 10,000 sq ft, while the number of parking spaces was increased to 147 from 127.

Covid rips through DHL depot after bosses failed to enforce safety regulations, union charges

COVID-19 has ripped through a DHL depot in Manchester after management failed to enforce appropriate safety regulations, the CWU charged today. The Communication Workers Union said over a third of the workforce have the virus after the parcel-delivery company allowed a day-shift manager with flu-like symptoms to return to work after a week off without completing 10 days of self-isolation or taking a coronavirus test as per government guidelines.   Concerned office and warehouse staff raised the matter at a meeting with the site manager, only to be told that the individual concerned was “confident” he did not have the virus. This is despite the fact he had come into close contact with another member of management who had already tested positive and who has now sadly died with Covid-19, the CWU said.
