The origin story really does involve a sketch on the back of an envelope, the one on which Volkswagen boss Ferdinand Piëch scribbled his proposal for an 18-cylinder powerplant in 1997. At the same time, he was leading VW through its empire-building expansion, crushing his enemies and delighting in the lamentations of their women. The company was then also deep in negotiations to buy Rolls-Royce. Piëch seems to have been thinking of a motor worthy of this proposed acquisition.

On the one hand, you want to like an M4 since it s arguably the sweet spot of BMW s entire M Performance range plenty of performance and that two-door silhouette you want in a sporty car, yet fairly accessible compared to the rest of the models.
On the other hand, it forces us to admit that maybe we were wrong to criticize the design so quickly without first giving it the benefit of the doubt. However, we won t do that just yet. We never said we liked the grille; we re just saying maybe it stopped seeming like the ugliest thing this world has ever seen, which is progress.

Its 5.0-liter V8 has the Bullitt s 480-horsepower tune and with a few powertrain and suspension upgrades from the Shelby GT350 (RIP), it makes for a rootin -tootin Mustang that s easy to like.
