The attorney for a former Simpson College professor charged with killing her husband alleged her client was coerced into giving damning statements and that she was not properly given Miranda warnings in interviews with police before she was arrested.
Gowun Park, 42, was charged last year with first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping after her husband Sung Woo Nam died in their West Des Moines home. Police said Park kept Nam s hands and feet bound with zip ties for hours Feb. 15, 2020, and left him tied to a chair with a towel duct-taped over his head before he died.
Court documents filed Jan. 29 by Assistant Dallas County Attorney Jeannine Ritchie and Assistant Iowa Attorney General Scott Brown listed Nam s official cause of death as strangulation. Park is expected back in court Tuesday for a suppression hearing after her attorney Gina Messamer filed a brief in October that asked the court to exclude all of her statements during her five interviews with police because
