The IFA has called on the Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue and the Government to act decisively to protect farmers and rural Ireland in advance of upcoming European negotiations on CAP.
IFA has intensified its CAP campaign with the publication of its
Six Key Objectives policy document.
IFA Rural Development Chairman Michael Biggins from Glencorrib in South Mayo says decisions in the coming weeks and months will decide the direction of our sector for the next seven years.
He met the Minister for Agriculture this week and is urging him to show real mettle during the key negotiations ahead.

Michael Biggins said that the €10m REAP budget is totally inadequate to cater for the demand for the scheme.
Minister of Agriculture Charlie McConalogue has been called on to increase the budget in the Results-based Environment Agri-Pilot (REAP) to meet the demand, ensuring all farmers who wish to participate in REAP are given the opportunity to do so.
IFA rural development chair Michael Biggins said the scheme closes to application on Monday 10 May and the scheme is already oversubscribed.
“While we know it’s a pilot project to run along with the existing schemes for 2021 and 2022, the budget of €10m per annum is totally inadequate to cater for the demand.

An Aberdeenshire folksinger’s voice has become the soundtrack to hopeful Aberdeen Football Club’s fans with her interpretation of The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen.
The song, originally written by Mary Webb in the early 1950s, is the latest single from Huntly songstress Iona Fyfe.
As part of Aberdeen’s 2021-22 season tickets campaign, the young singer collaborated with the club, who commissioned the recording.
‘Huge disappointment’ for farmers as details of REAP revealed

Farming organisations have said they are stunned and disappointed by the details of the Results-Based Environment Agri Pilot Programme (REAP) while others have described the pilot as a “damp squib”.
Speaking after a meeting with the Department of Agriculture last week, IFA rural development chairperson, Michael Biggins said the details of REAP are a “damp squib”.
He said that after the all the hype, the Department confirmed that the budget for the new scheme for 2021 will only be €10m, out of the €79m for new agri-environment and other farm support measures announced in the Budget.
