Readers may recall Paul Vincent Davis as the artistic director and artist-in-residence of Puppet Showplace Theater in Brookline. He was a neighborhood treasure who had lived in Brookline Village since 1976.
These days, Davis, 86, is a resident of Deutsches Altenheim, the German Centre for Extended Care in West Roxbury.
But for more than 30 years, thousands of children and adults enjoyed the fine art of puppetry he brought to life at the Station Street theater.
Given the pandemic, Davis has been spending a lot of time reading, still mostly about puppetry. A Richmond, Va., native, his love of the genre began when he received a puppet on his fourth birthday. He went on to stage plays for family and friends, and he also read many books on puppetry. In high school, he performed a marionette show that received a standing ovation. “That was a pivotal moment in my life,” Davis said in a German Centre press release.

In 2014, Maui Planning Commission rejected local residents’ request to participate in the SMA approval. Those objections and concerns are now a reality as the project has been developed. As Lahaina News and The Maui News reported in September 2020, the appeal was sustained voiding the commission’s decision.
Loss of an important historical place is heartbreaking. Disregard for laws is infuriating. Robbed of due process, the commission’s misguided decision has resulted in irreparable damage.

Lights! Camera! Computer Screen! T he artists of Tantrum Theatre Company are still finding new, innovative ways to take on the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic presents for live performance.
The company will be presenting Spring Awakening, a rock musical about teenagers coming of age sexually during the late 19th century and the present day, focusing on the effects of adults withholding information from their children. The show will be streamed online, Roberto Di Donato, assistant producing director for Tantrum, said.
The majority of the cast is made up of students from the College of Fine Arts’ recently created musical theater major, and the performance will be their first full production within the program. Like Tantrum’s other productions, professional actors will also be joining the team as well as some members of Ohio University’s faculty.

Election campaign slogans asserted “the battle is for the soul of the nation,” inferring that the decision is really between good and evil, with the fate of the nation at stake.
The Bible presents these opposing forces as Babylon and Jerusalem. Besides actual physical places, these cities represent choices of how you want to live and how those decisions will determine the future. Ultimately, Babylon is destroyed, and Jerusalem continues forever.
Jerusalem represents doing things God’s way. Considered either politically incorrect or outdated, tolerance of anything but biblical precepts is prevalent. With emphasis on sensual pleasures and materialism, Babylon represents sexual immorality and greedy decadent lifestyles.
