Wu Mengchao, the revered liver surgeon who pioneered the field in China and drastically improved the country s surgical success rate for liver cancer, passed away in Shanghai due to illness on Saturday at the age of 99.
In 1991, Wu was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2005, he became the first physician to receive the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award, China s highest academic accolade, for raising the success rate of hepatic surgery for liver cancer patients in China from 16 percent to over 98 percent.

ESA to live tweet asteroid impact exercise
For almost a decade, world asteroid experts have been meeting every two years at the Planetary Defense Conference and pretending an asteroid impact is imminent. Why? To prepare for the unlikely – but plausible – scenario in which this comes true.
For the second time in the conference s history, this major international asteroid impact exercise will be covered live via ESA social media, primarily via the @esaoperations in Twitter, highlighting the actions that might be taken by scientists, space agencies and civil protection organisations.

ESA said on April 26, 2021 that it will be live tweeting the asteroid impact exercise being discussed at this week’s Planetary Defense Conference, which is held virtually April 26 through 30.
