A legislative committee is considering a proposal that would allow a court to temporarily restrict a person’s access to weapons in protection from harassment cases.
Maine law already allows a judge to restrict a person’s access to weapons in protection from abuse cases. The Legislature s Judiciary Committee is considering a proposal sponsored by Democratic state Sen. Anne Carney to expand that judicial power.
“What this legislation does is it just gives courts in protection from harassment actions the same authority they have in protection from abuse actions, she says.

I have to admit that gun safety hasn’t been much of a priority for me legislatively. However, with the recent killings in Atlanta and Boulder, and here in Waterville with a drive-by shooting and the accidental shooting of a 2-year-old, I’ve decided that it’s time to make my voice heard.
We tend to think that guns here in Maine are just a part of life used for hunting and that those who own them know how to store and use them safely, but that’s not true. More than five times as many people died by suicide in Maine in 2017 than in alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents and the majority of those deaths involved guns. Guns are also the primary weapons in domestic violence murders in Maine.

What does ‘Second Amendment sanctuary’ actually mean? Absolutely nothing.
Try as they might to fight for local gun-rights refuges, proponents are firing blanks.
Few sayings drive me more to distraction these days than “out of an abundance of caution.”
What does it actually mean? That good old-fashioned caution no longer cuts it? That we’re only being truly cautious if we go overboard? That we can’t be too careful in these perilous times?
I have no idea. But now, as I peruse the news from all over Maine, I find myself snagged on an equally perplexing idiom. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the “Second Amendment sanctuary.”
