The American Jobs Plan Provides Historic Opportunities for Maine

The American Jobs Plan would create new jobs by providing critical upgrades to our nation’s infrastructure while also helping to build a clean energy economy across the United States. It represents a broad and forward-thinking investment in the future that would deliver enormous benefits to Maine’s economy, environment, and people in every part of our state.
This is an important and historic moment. The American Jobs Plan is focused on helping the nation emerge from the pandemic stronger than before by focusing resources in areas that urgently need attention, investment, and repairs. Here are 11 specific examples of how the American Jobs Plan would benefit the lives and livelihoods of Maine people:
Brewer to Pay $35,000 Fine After Clogged Pump Station Sends Wastewater Into Penobscot River
Brewer’s wastewater treatment plant became clogged and the city will pay a $35,000 fine after the clog sent more than a million gallons of wastewater into the Penobscot River.
The city of Brewer, Maine, will pay a $35,000 fine after a pump station clog sent more than a million gallons of wastewater into the Penobscot River.
The agreement is with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and comes more than two years after the December 2018 violation, when pumps at Brewer’s wastewater treatment plant became clogged with wet wipes, rags and other debris, according to The Bangor Daily News.

Just a short drive from the University of Maine campus, not far from the banks of the Penobscot River, lies the Juniper Ridge Landfill. Despite its proximity to the university and wafting odors to the surrounding area, many people are blind to this mass dumping zone. This state-owned landfill is growing in size and toxicity each day, impacting the state of Maine in a myriad of ways.
This landfill was founded in 2004 and has been home to out-of-state dumping through a loophole in Maine waste regulations. Approximately one-third of the 179 acre landfill is composed of toxic out-of-state waste from other New England states. Most of the New England states understand the toxicity of construction and demolition debris (CDD) and have set up legislation banning the dumping of such waste in state landfills. Protect South Portland holds rally against petroleum tank emissions
The local environmental group is promoting a bill that would increase state regulation of air pollution from petroleum storage tanks.

Central Maine Power funds EV charger grants Contributed • April 23, 2021
AUGUSTA Central Maine Power has awarded grants for Level 2 chargers for Electric Vehicles at 11 locations, offering 48 new plugs in Maine from Kittery to Monson. CMP will install, maintain and retain ownership of the electrical infrastructure needed to connect to the charging pads and has awarded incentives for up to $4,000 per plug toward the cost of the infrastructure.
