Plans for North Street gravel pit comes to Planning Board
ELLSWORTH The Planning Board on March 3 will hear details of a proposed 10-acre gravel pit on a 45-acre North Street parcel, after E. Skip Grindle & Sons submitted a land development permit application to the city planning office earlier this month. The landscaping business currently has a small gravel pit and blueberry fields on the property (Tax Map 60, Lot 008), which abuts both Graham Lake and Grindle’s business at 485 North St. Everett “Skip” Grindle purchased the property last November from trustees of the Meredith A. Friend Trust.
The property lies in the rural and shoreland limited residential zones, where mineral extraction, including gravel pits, is an allowed use. But as a major use site development plan, the project requires approval by the Planning Board through the site plan review process. University of Maine Cooperative Extension will offer a three-webinar series about compost issues in agriculture and waste management, Thursday, March 11, and Tuesdays March 23 and March 30, from noon –1 p.m.
This compost webinar series first examines the organic certification process for compost usage with Caleb Goossen, Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) organic crop and conservation specialist; followed by carcass composting with Krishona Martinson, University of Minnesota professor and Extension equine specialist; and composting hemp residual with Mark King, Maine Department of Environmental Protection environmental specialist and Maine Compost School educator.

DEP receives plan for South Thomaston solar farm

South Thomaston The developer of a proposed solar farm off Route 131 in South Thomaston has submitted an application to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.
The application submitted by South Thomaston Solar LLC for a four-megawatt project is available at the town office.
The application was filed Feb. 12 and states that the project will occupy slightly more than 20 acres.
The DEP staff is currently reviewing the application for completeness before it can formally accepted for processing, DEP Acting Deputy Commissioner David Madore said Feb. 19.
