WHS grad DiSpirito wins prestigious Truman Scholarship

WOONSOCKET – A Woonsocket High School graduate has received a nationally competitive scholarship to continue her studies in law and environmental work. Dominique DiSpirito, WHS Class of 2018, is one of 62 students across the country to be named a 2021 Truman Scholar. The junior at the University of Maine plans to use the scholarship to attend law school and pursue a career in environmental policy. “In a very real sense, I definitely think I’m still processing, but it’s a huge honor and it’s really humbling,” she said. “Because this is what I want to do with my life, so to be recognized nationally as someone who has the potential and they are going to make a difference, it’s a huge honor.”

West, DiSpirito earn Maine Campus Compact awards Bailey West, the University of Maine’s 2021 valedictorian from Stockton Springs, and Dominique DiSpirito, a junior from Woonsocket, Rhode Island, both earned the Maine Campus Compact’s 2021 Heart and Soul Student award.  The award, one of five administered by the Maine Campus Compact, recognizes six Maine undergraduate students who are actively involved in transforming their campuses and communities into environments of civic engagement. According to the organization, these students have developed positive community and campus change, worked to institutionalize their community projects, demonstrated leadership and implemented innovative approaches to social issues. Dominique DiSpirito, a University of Maine junior dedicated to strengthening communities through environmental policy, is a finalist for a 2021 Harry S. Truman Scholarship. The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation awards its prestigious, merit-based scholarships to juniors pursuing public service careers. Recipients can receive up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school, and earn access to “leadership development activities” and “special opportunities for internships and employment with the federal government,” according to the foundation.  Finalists like DiSpirito, a political science major and Honors College student from Woonsocket, Rhode Island, are selected based on their record of community service and government involvement, leadership experience and academic, writing and analytical abilities.
