Gilpatrick Solar Project receives final approval
ELLSWORTH A fourth solar farm has been given the green light in Ellsworth after the Planning Board gave final and unanimous approval to the Gilpatrick Solar Project on Feb. 2.
The 3.5-megawatt, 19.81-acre ground-mounted solar array will be sited on a 127-acre parcel and connect to three-phase power utility lines on Gilpatrick Road, which is off Bangor Road and located in the rural and urban zones.
Access roads will be built to the array site, which will be hidden from view from Bangor Road and nearby neighborhoods, according to Dale Knapp and Chris Byers, of Boyle Associates, who represented the application for Aypa Power. Aypa Power is a subsidiary of Blackstone Energy and headquartered in New York City.

Historical Society wrestles with what to do with the Old Jail
ELLSWORTH Can a dollar value be placed on history? That is the root question behind an effort to preserve the former sheriff’s house and jail that houses the Ellsworth Historical Society and is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings.
“Despite my own past misgivings and indecision, I have come to believe the society’s ethical, social, civic and moral obligation to Ellsworth is to preserve this important downtown building for future generations,” Society President Bill Fogle wrote to members on Dec. 31.
The old jail is located on State Street next to the Hancock County Courthouse.

Christ Church, Gardiner will be the topic of the Kennebec Historical Society’s December public Facebook presentation set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, at facebook.com/KHS1891.
This year Christ Church in Gardiner is celebrating the 200th anniversary of its landmark house of worship. Constructed of local granite between 1818 and 1820, Christ Church is Maine’s first example of Gothic Revival church architecture.
This distinctive building was erected primarily through the support of Robert Hallowell Gardiner I, who secured the plans from the Rev. Samuel Farmar Jarvis. From 1847 to 1866 the church served as the seat of Maine’s first Episcopal bishop George Burgess, who is buried in the adjacent churchyard.
