Dead mammal at Mogaveerapatna was False Killer Whale: Scientists

‘This is the first time it was found stranding on State coastline’ Scientists have said that the 10-ft long whale that was washed ashore at Mogaveerapatna in Ullal, off Mangaluru, on Thursday was a False Killer Whale (Pseudorca Crassidens). According to Prathibha Rohit, principal scientist and head of Indian Council of Agricultural Research’s Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Mangaluru, this is the first time a False Killer Whale was found stranding on Karnataka coastline. The earlier incidents of stranding of this mammal was reported in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In a statement, Ms. Rohit said False Killer Whales were the largest species of the family of Delphinide that includes dolphins, killer whales, and pilot whales. This species of oceanic dolphin are common in deep tropical to warm temperature seas. They visit coastal waters but prefer remaining deep waters. They are found throughout the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Indian Oceans

According to fishers, the current dry spell will continue for a couple of months and they are forced to net whatever is available. “Fishing days started to shrink after Ockhi and in 2020 we got minimal working days. Till January end there was a marginal increase in catch, but now we are going through a very difficult phase. We know the practice is unethical and harmful in the long run, but right now we can’t survive without indulging in juvenile fishing,” says Surendran, fisher.

Image Source: IANS News Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 3 : The state-owned Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Company (KSINC) has entered into an association with US-based EMCC International for a Rs 2,950 crore project to manufacture deep sea fishing trawlers. KSINC Managing Director N. Prasanth and EMCC president Shiju Vargheese signed a memorandum of understanding in this regard. This is a follow-up to the understanding the state government had with EMCC during the Ascend 2020 investment seminar organised by the state government.

KSINC bags ₹2,950-crore order from US firm for deep sea fishing project

February 03, 2021 Will involve building 400 deep sea fishing trawlers, port development activities, among others Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC) has bagged one of the major work orders worth ₹2,950 crore from a US firm EMCC International for deep sea fishing. The project, in which an MoU was singed between N Prasanth, Managing Director, KSINC, and Shiju Varghese, President, EMCC International, consist of building 400 deep sea fishing trawlers for the fishing communities and port development activities, among others. Currently foreign trawlers are more in use in the State. This will be one of the largest foreign investment projects in the State and in the biggest work order in the history of KSINC, officials said.
