Karianne, who asked that her last name be withheld, was facing an eviction in April 2020. She applied for multiple rental assistance programs but never heard back, despite numerous attempts to contact them. She ultimately received an eviction notice, which required her to go to court to stay in her home. “There are so many people that need help right now, unfortunately. And I think it’s just a matter of the system is just so backlogged, and so they’re just drowning right now,” she says. Karianne now volunteers with the Milwaukee Autonomous Tenants Union. She is seen at a friend’s apartment on June 24, 2021 with signs the union brought to a protest against a landlord who recently raised rents. (Will Cioci / Wisconsin Watch)

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) â A new task force is being created in Central Wisconsin regarding affordable housing.
Tuesday evening at their monthly meeting Wausauâs Economic Development Committee discussed adopting a charter for an affordable housing task force for the City. The idea of an affordable housing task force had been brought up by the Committee before earlier in the year while discussing a Thomas St. RFP proposal submission.
Mayor Katie Rosenberg has spent time working on putting together the charter for the affordable housing task force. The charter lays out the task forceâs mission and purpose, its membership, its duties and responsibilities, and its other organizational relationships.

Franklin County residents have an opportunity to help out people in their community and many local restaurants this week.
The South Central Community Action Program is hosting a virtual auction and celebration this week, with almost 200 items up for auction. The page can be found here.
One sizeable part of the auction is gift cards for local restaurants. Usually, restaurants would donate the gift cards to auctions, but in the midst of the pandemic, SCCAP had to find another way. We knew that we couldn t go to restaurants who are having such a hard time and ask them to donate gift cards, so we created a couple sponsorship opportunities where our sponsors supported our restaurants by purchasing gift cards and then putting them into our auction, Cheryl Brown, resource development director, said. It s a really cool win-win situation.
