Taipei, May 22 (CNA) Taiwan on Saturday reported a total of 723 new COVID-19 cases, of which 721 were domestically transmitted infections and two were imported, but the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said 400 of the cases were being reported now due to a backlog in testing results becoming available over the last few days.
Of the total, 321 were new domestic cases, two were new imported cases, and 400 were domestic cases caused by the backlog, according to the CECC.
Based on that explanation, the total cases reported Saturday shows a continuing, albeit slight, drop since Thursday, rather than a sharp increase if the 400 cases were to be categorized as cases confirmed on Saturday, which is the normal reporting and tallying method used in the past.

The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) yesterday reported 321 new local COVID-19 infections and two deaths, while an additional 400 cases that had been delayed in reporting have been added to the daily confirmed cases reported from Sunday last week to Friday.
Two imported cases were also confirmed yesterday, said Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who heads the center.
The 400 delayed cases have been added to the previously reported cases following “regression calibration,” he said.

COVID-19: CECC to supply alcohol for disinfection
IN HIGH DEMAND: About 1.7 million bottles of rubbing alcohol have been sold so far this month, but the center pledged to supply more than 2 million bottles within a week

The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) yesterday said that about 1.12 million bottles of rubbing alcohol would tomorrow be distributed to retailers across Taiwan.
Deputy Minister of the Interior Chen Tsung-yen (陳宗彥), who is deputy commander of the center, said that the CECC’s National Epidemic Prevention Meeting with city and county government officials reached a consensus on three issues.
First, as COVID-19 cases have been reported in many cities and counties, the CECC would provide local governments with additional data about the locations that residents who tested positive for the disease visited, Chen said, adding that this would help accelerate contact tracing.
