Taiwan s COVID vaccines about to enter phase 2 clinical trials: FDA

CNA file photo Taipei, Dec. 23 (CNA) A number of COVID-19 vaccines developed in Taiwan have completed the first phase of clinical trials and are likely to enter phase 2 trials by the end of the year, the nation s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Wednesday. The developers of the vaccines are currently compiling the data from the first-phase trials and are preparing to start the second phase of their vaccine trials in late December, FDA official Wu Ming-mei (吳明美) told CNA in a phone interview, without specifying the number of vaccines. The individuals who participated in the clinical trials of the locally developed COVID-19 vaccines did not report any major side effects in the seven days after they were vaccinated, Wu said.

Six new imported cases of COVID-19 reported in Taiwan

Photo courtesy of the CECC Taipei, Dec. 23 (CNA) Taiwan reported six new imported cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, three from the Philippines and three from Indonesia, bringing the total number of cases in Taiwan to 776, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC). All of the new cases are migrant workers who had proof of a negative COVID-19 test result issued within three days of their flights to Taiwan, said Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who heads the CECC, at a routine press conference. Two of the cases from the Philippines, a woman in her 30s and a man in his 20s, came to Taiwan on Dec. 8 and tested positive prior to finishing quarantine, Chen said.

The CECC has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday afternoon to detail the additional cases. On Tuesday, Taiwan reported that a local contact of a pilot from New Zealand who was diagnosed with COVID-19 on Sunday tested positive for the virus, making the individual the first domestic case reported in Taiwan since April 12. The domestic case involved a woman in her 30s, an employee of an affiliate of leading notebook computer ODM services provider Quanta Computer Inc.
