Chen warns against letting guard down

Taiwan cannot afford to relax measures to halt the spread of COVID-19 now, Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said yesterday, as he reported 262 locally transmitted cases, 65 backlogged cases and 13 deaths.
Of the 262 local infections, 136 are male and 126 are female. They began experiencing symptoms between May 20 and Monday, said Chen, who heads the Central Epidemic Command Center.
The 65 backlogged cases comprised 31 males and 34 females who began showing symptoms between May 20 and Sunday, he added.
The Taiwanese medical authorities reported 355 new local cases of Covid-19 and 11 deaths on Sunday, as a pro-Beijing school said a mainland-based organisation had offered to send it millions of vaccines. However, any donations still need to be approved by the Taiwanese authorities and many island residents may be reluctant to accept them given the widespread distrust of the Beijing authorities. The 355 new infections included 266 new local cases.
The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) yesterday reported 320 locally transmitted COVID-19 infections, 166 backlogged cases and 21 deaths.
Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who heads the center, said that among the 320 local infections, 169 are male and 151 are female, from under the age of five to over 90.
They began displaying symptoms from May 7 to Friday, he said.
Of the 486 cases reported yesterday, 224 live in New Taipei City, followed by Taipei with 168 cases, Taichung with 33, Taoyuan with 19, Keelung with 14, Taitung and Yilan counties with five each, and Hualien and Chiayi
