An NHS campaign launched this week encouraging local residents to act on symptoms that may be a sign of cancer.
The North Central London Cancer Alliance (NCLCA), covering Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington, is urging people to “act early” so they can get screening and treatment – if required – as quickly as possible.
Figures from the Centre for Cancer Outcomes estimate 950 “missing” diagnoses across the five boroughs between April 2020 to January 2021, compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Highgate resident Sam Jukes-Adams is a case in point. She received her cervical screening invitation letter last May but initially ignored it for fear of taking up the NHS’ time, and her worries over going to the GP at the height of the pandemic.
THE plan to hand medical practices with hundreds of thousands of patients to a scandal-ridden US health privateer is to be challenged in court.
North Central London Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), a government body that awards contracts for NHS provision, is handing eight GP practices with 375,000 patients to US health insurance firm Centene.
The company and its web of subsidiaries have a track record of falsely claiming taxpayers’ income and of failing to provide adequate health services to patients in the United States.
Patients, doctors and NHS campaign groups have united to mount the legal challenge.
Led by Keep Our NHS Public (KONP) and 999 Call for the NHS, the campaigners want a judicial review of the decision, alleging that the CCG “was not sufficiently diligent in its investigation into the potential impact, and failed to engage patients and the public in the decision.”

Students and young people were urged this week to make a distinction between Covid-19 and the fall-out from the pandemic, as they took part in a first of its kind seminar held under the auspices of the London Jewish Forum.
The discussion, which was partnered across the community by major Jewish organisations, is part of a number of conversations organised by the Greater London Authority and supported by Public Health England.
