Rapides Parish public schools are closing early Wednesday because of the threat of bad weather.
Superintendent Jeff Powell said schools that normally dismiss at 2:30 p.m. now will dismiss at 11:30 a.m. Later dismissals will happen as bus drivers arrive at schools.
Parents can pick up their children early as needed, said Powell.
Rapides Parish is at a moderate risk for severe weather on Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. National Weather Service in Lake Charles.
Between 2 to 7 p.m., there s the possibility for strong tornadoes, wind gusts of more than 75 mph and large hail. A tornado watch has been issued until 6 p.m. for Avoyelles, Rapides and other Cenla parishes.

Alexandria, La., Jan. 26, 2021 Central Louisiana Technical Community College (CLTCC) is partnering with Ochsner Health to offer COVID-19 testing at no cost for CLTCC students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Testing will take place at the CLTCC Multipurpose Room at 516 Murray St. in Alexandria. The schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, Jan. 26, 12 – 4 p.m.
Wednesday, Jan. 27 & Thursday, Jan. 28, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 29, 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.
