36,400 unmarked cigarettes seized during traffic stop in Midland: OPP

  BARRIE, ONT. Officers seized 36,400 unmarked cigarettes and sent a 52-year-old man who they say was out on parole to jail following a traffic stop in Midland. Provincial police say the accused, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, breached the conditions of his parole and was wanted by another police service for an ongoing investigation.  They did not disclose the details of that investigation. Police say the parolee was sent to the Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene with a future court date. He faces charges of possessing unmarked cigarettes for the purpose of sale and possessing unmarked cigarettes contrary to the Tobacco Tax Free Act.

BARRIE, ONT. The Simcoe Muskoka health unit reports 44 COVID-19 cases Tuesday. Dr. Charles Gardner, Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) medical officer of health, says the newly added cases could set a record this week. I think we re on track this week to having the highest number of cases we ve ever had, he said Tuesday afternoon. Since last week s update, Gardner said three Simcoe County residents have died with the virus. One is a woman in her 80s, and one is a man in his 80s, both passed away at Georgian Bay General Hospital, and one is a man between the ages of 45 and 64 who passed away at Toronto Western Hospital, he said.

Simcoe Muskoka teeters on verge of a lockdown as COVID-19 cases climb

  BARRIE, ONT. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) reports 62 COVID-19 cases Friday, for a weekly total of 321. The health unit lists 17 people in the hospital with the virus and 448 active cases across Simcoe Muskoka. Four people died with COVID-19 this week, including two at Georgian Bay General Hospital, where staff are battling a stubborn outbreak of the virus. The recent virus-related deaths bring the region s death toll to 58. Along with the Midland hospital, there are nine other institutional outbreaks listed by the health unit. Eight of those are in seniors homes, while one is at the Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene.
