Concerns were raised after barn owls were found dead, having starved due to the challenges of this winter. Locals estimate at least seven barn owls were found dead in Amulree, in rural Perthshire, alone. But the real number of deaths will not be known until breeding season, experts say.

Land managers have raised concern after details emerged of dead barn owls falling foul of the ravages of the Scottish winter. Essentially a sub-tropical species with limited ability to adapt to the cold, the nocturnal bird is at the northern limit of its global range in Scotland. Conservationists say that unlike other owls, they do not have leg feathers, making them susceptible to weather extremes. Now land managers in one area of Perthshire renowned for high barn owl breeding success fear heavy snows could have spelt the worst winter for the species in over a decade after multiple pictures of deaths were circulated.

Data sourced from studies by the British Trust for Ornithology, RSPB and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee showed kestrel numbers in Scotland have declined 82% between 1994 and 2019. The small falcon, which the RSPB says has “a history of persecution” and was heavily targeted in the late 19th and early 20th Century by gamekeepers despite “rarely” preying on game-bird chicks, is now being mooted as a species requiring concerted conservation attention in Britain.
