According to CMIE, this loss of 11 million jobs is almost equally spread among business persons, salaried employees and daily wage earners and is because of the lockdown. Employment in February 2021 compared to the average of 2019-20 shows a loss of 3 million jobs among business persons, 3.8 million jobs among salaried employees and 4.2 million among daily-wage earners.

A year after the nationwide lockdown in March, India’s labour force in the non-farm sector was short of 11 million in February 2021 compared to 2019-20 and the fresh lockdown could worsen the situation, warns the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy.
