It is a deliberate ploy by the Federal Government to take the minds of Nigerians off the raging banditry, kidnapping, insurgency and insecurity that have enveloped the country. Why should the deletion of one out of several thousands of tweets made ‘supposedly’ by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari.
She made the plea in Abuja at the Youth Digital Engagement Project Closeout and Dissemination meeting.
She called on the government to rescind its decision as it had a huge impact on the lives of emerging young entrepreneurs depending on social media for their livelihood.
“It’s also a counter-productive move for a nation seeking to create more jobs and reduce poverty as part of its post-COVID-19 recovery strategy,” Obi said.
She said that the YDE sought to use technology to support the work of young people in holding duty bearers to account through funding from Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).

On 4 June 2021, the government of Nigeria “suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter” in the country. The decision was announced days after a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari was deleted by the platform.
Since then, access to Twitter through Nigeria s main phone service providers has been blocked, according to news reports.
So far the government has not detailed how the ban will be operationalised in practice. Also, no further explanations have been given to justify the ban beyond a reference to the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria s corporate existence.”
