As part of the cross-government Cyber Aware campaign, GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has created the Cyber Action Plan to help micro businesses and sole traders securely navigate the increasingly digital landscape they operate in.

Over the past year, businesses in the UK have adjusted to new ways of working and are using the internet more than ever before. According to a report from the Centre for Economic Performance, more than 60% of businesses are using new technologies since the beginning of the pandemic. This is happening in almost all industries – including accounting.  The increased use of email, online payments and collaboration software has brought great benefits to the finance and accounting sector, but it does come with risks. Early in the coronavirus pandemic last year, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) published guidance for businesses on securely making the transition to organisation-wide home working.

Groundhog Day : north-east business groups respond to plans for easing lockdown Business groups in the north-east have been responding to the announcement on plans to ease Scotland s coronavirus lockdown. The first minister hopes to be able to allow retail, hospitality, gyms and hairdressers to start operating again some time after April 26. Some other forms of non-essential retail - like click and collect - may be allowed to resume earlier in the month. No specific plans have been set out for other sectors, but the country would return to a levels system like the one seen before Christmas, with restrictions applied depending on local data.

The IGM Forum at Chicago Booth invited its panels of leading European and US economists to express their views on the likely long-term effects of Brexit on both the UK economy and the aggregate economy of the remaining 27 EU members. As this column reports, a strong majority (86% of the panellists) agrees that the UK economy is likely to be at least several percentage points smaller in 2030 than it otherwise would have been. Views are more divided on the EU-27 economy: nearly a quarter of respondents agree that it will be at least several percentage points smaller in 2030 than it otherwise would have been; but more than a third are uncertain; while 41% do not expect the impact to be that strongly negative.
