SITUATION OVERVIEW
Tropical Storm Chalane, which formed last week in the Indian Ocean, made landfall in Fenoarivo Atsinanana (Fénérive Est in French) District, Madagascar, on 27 December with maximum wind gusts of between 40 and 50 km/h. Southern Africa, Flash Update No.2: Tropical Storm Chalane (as of 24 December 2020)
Format
The tropical depression that formed in the Indian Ocean has intensified into Tropical Storm Chalane.
Chalane is projected to make landfall on the north-east coast of Madagascar on 27 December 2020, bringing heavy rains.
Predictions indicate that the storm could subsequently move towards Mozambique and other countries in the region.
Authorities in Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe are on alert and coordinating preparedness activities.
Situation Overview
The tropical depression that formed earlier this week in the Indian Ocean intensified on 24 December into Moderate Tropical Storm Chalane. The tropical storm was located about 860 kilometres east of Antalaha District in Madagascar in the afternoon of 24 December and was moving at 17 km/h with an average wind speed of 75 km/h and gusts capping 100 km/h. Madagascar is likely to be hit by a severe weather system a day after Christmas and it’s expected to affect Mozambique afterwards and possibly Zimbabwe.
The tropical depression is developing in the Indian Ocean, northeast of Mauritius and east of Madagascar. Zimbabwe’s Meteorological Services Department (MSD) forecast that it would continue southwestward and intensify in coming days. If it gets worse than a tropical storm it will be named Cyclone Chalane.
