City looks to update its historic preservation plan

Moberly City Council briefly held an open business meeting Wednesday, May 26 prior to its scheduled close session gathering at 6 p.m. for the purpose of authorizing the city to apply for a Missouri Historic Preservation Fund Grant to help support a new historic preservation plan for Moberly.
City Manager Brian Crane said the special public meeting at City Hall was quickly arranged upon him learning that a state deadline to receive such applications would occur prior to the council s June 8 business meeting. Such plans have an estimated cost of $30,000 said Crane and providing that Moberly s application meets deadline, he is expects it would gain approval for grant monies to reimburse the city for nearly two-thirds of the historical plan s total cost.
Jeffrey resumes role as Moberly mayor, city addresses issues, approves re-zoning areas

Jerry Jeffrey and Tim Brubaker were both re-elected to serve another 3-year term on the Moberly City Council as they faced no opposition on the April 6 election ballot. As part of the re-organizing process at the start of Monday s city council business meeting, Jeffrey was named by the council to continue to serve as mayor and Brubaker keeps his mayor pro-tem position. John Kimmons, Cole Davis and Austin Kyser are the other council members.
The following are some brief business matters approved by the council at its April 19 public meeting held at City Hall.

Whether to invest and construct, or to walk away from the idea of building a new hotel in the Moberly downtown district are questions that the City of Moberly hopes the results of a market analysis and feasibility study will help interested parties involved to make their business decision.
This subject was one of the agenda items discussed by the Moberly City Council at its April 19 business meeting. The council gave its blessing Monday for the city to hire Grey Hospitality Group for $10,500 plus direct expenses to conduct a study concerning a need to construct a hotel on property located at 220 W. Reed. The proposed hotel would be located at the southeast corner of Reed and Williams and the hotel structure would extend east toward the former Commerce Bank building.
MOBERLY- The Moberly Area Chamber of Commerce started implementing its strategic plan of tourism which includes a brand new destination hotel.
In 2018, the chamber developed the plan and included a hotel study through the city. The study looked to see if the city had the correct number of hotel rooms in the community to suit the needs of travelers and visitors.
Megan Schmitt, Director of the Moberly Area Chamber of Commerce, said a hotel downtown will help the city tremendously. Our hotel is really a need, but it s also something that we desperately want in our downtown, Schmitt said. We have a hotel shortage. There are only 122 rooms available in Moberly. The hotels are typically full. At least Monday through Friday, if not over the weekend also.
