May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said more than 5,000 motorcyclists died in 2019.
NHTSA has several recommendations for both drivers and motorcyclists to keep everyone safe and alive on the road.

Motorist Awareness Safe riding practices and cooperation from all road users will help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our nationâs highways. But itâs especially important for drivers to understand the safety challenges faced by motorcyclists such as size and visibility, and motorcycle riding practices like downshifting and weaving to know how to anticipate and respond to them. By raising motoristsâ awareness, both drivers and riders will be safer sharing the road.
2020 was Colorado’s deadliest year on record for motorcyclists
STATEWIDE – On the heels of the deadliest year on record for motorcyclists, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is launching a new campaign aimed at keeping motorcyclists safe. May is also Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, which coincides with the beginning of the riding season in the state.
Last year, there were 137 motorcyclists killed on Colorado roadways, more than any year on record, and a 33 percent increase from 2019 when there were 103 motorcyclists killed. Although motorcycles are only 3 percent of the registered vehicles in the state, they made up 22 percent of the traffic fatalities in 2020.

FRANKFORT â In recognition of May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) joins the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in reminding motorists and motorcyclists to âshare the roadâ to help prevent crashes, injuries and deaths on Kentucky roadways.
âSafety is a mutual responsibility for motorists and motorcyclists alike,â said Gov. Andy Beshear. âWeâre entering the warmer months and that typically means more drivers may operate motorcycles on our roadways. With more than 95,000 registered motorcycles in Kentucky, all road users must stay alert and look out for one another.â

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - May is âMotorcycle Safety Awareness Month.â And police say fatalities involving motorcyclists in Missouri are rising.
The Missouri Highway Patrol reports 18 fatalities in the last four months.
That is compared to 11 fatalities in all of 2020.
Investigators believe, in part, the increase is because of more traffic on the roads now, compared to the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. Inattentive drivers also play a part.
