A 19-year veteran police officer with the Long Branch Police Department has been suspended without pay after being arrested for operating a methamphetamine lab at his home, authorities said.
Christopher Walls, 50, of West End Avenue was charged on Sunday with various offenses related to manufacturing and maintaining a meth laboratory at his home, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.
Walls also was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, Gramiccioni said.
“Thanks to the swift action of our office, the Long Branch Police Department, and the New Jersey State Police, a very serious risk to public safety has been averted, Gramiccioni said.

Manzo is also charged with two counts of fourth-degree stalking, stemming from the 2017 incident, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni.
He had already faced federal charges alongside John Perna, as outlined last June by the U.S. Attorney s Office.
Perna identified as a soldier in the Lucchese crime family by federal prosecutors had been sent to attack Cantin in 2015 at a strip mall in Passaic County, where Perna and another man beat him with a slap jack, according to a criminal complaint.
In federal court, prosecutors had said that Manzo hired the reputed mobster to carry out the assault in exchange for a lavish wedding reception at the Brownstone, the venue that Manzo partly owns in Paterson.

FREEHOLD - The ex-husband of a Real Housewives of New Jersey star has been indicted by a grand jury on several charges of robbery and burglary, as well as aggravated assault on Claudine Dina Manzo and her then-fiancé, David Cantín, at their townhouse in Holmdel in 2017, authorities announced Tuesday.
Thomas Manzo, 56, of Franklin Lakes, is facing charges of first-degree robbery, second-degree burglary, second- and third-degree aggravated assault, third-degree theft, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and third-degree criminal restraint, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.
At 10:54 p.m. on May 13, 2017, police responded to a Banyan Boulevard townhouse after receiving a call from Cantín, 39, and Dina Manzo, 47, that they had been attacked by two unknown men as they entered the front door around 10:45 p.m.

A Monmouth County grand jury on Friday returned an indictment against a 23-year-old Wall man, already imprisoned for abusing his young son, in the death of his 6-week-old daughter in 2019, authorities said.
The indictment charges Austin Meli with murder and endangering the welfare of a child, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni said in a news release. Court documents allege Meli suffocated the girl to death in a fit of anger.
Meli s infant daughter, identified as G.B. in court documents, died March 9, 2019, after she went unresponsive while in the care of her father, according to the news release.
