Former Sam’s Club chief executive to succeed Stefano Pessina
Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) has named Rosalind Brewer, chief operating officer of Starbucks, as its new CEO, succeeding Stefano Pessina, who will become executive chairman.
Plans call for Brewer to take the CEO reins on March 15, at which time she also will join the board of directors, WBA said in announcing the appointment Tuesday evening.
Deerfield, Ill.-based WBA, the parent company of the Walgreens drugstore chain, had announced in late July that Pessina would step down as chief executive once a successor was identified and take over the executive chairman’s role from James Skinner, who is stepping down but will remain on the board as a director for the leadership transition.
Walgreens Boots Alliance has appointed Roz Brewer CEO and Stefano Pessina executive chairman of the board.
Another female CEO has been appointed to a major health care company as Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. (WBA) appoints Rosalind Roz Brewer to the leadership position, effective March 15. Brewer will join the WBA board of directors upon assuming the role. She succeeds Stefano Pessina, who, as previously reported, will transition to the role of executive chairman of WBA s board.
“The board conducted an extensive search to identify an exceptional leader who will build on WBA’s track record of success and take advantage of the many growth opportunities in many markets across the company. We are excited to have found that person in Roz,” said Pessina. “She is a distinguished and experienced executive who has led organizations globally through periods of changing consumer behavior by applying innovation that elevates customer experiences

Walgreens Boots Alliance has appointed Roz Brewer as its next Chief Executive Officer. She will replace Stefano Pessina who announced last summer that he planned to transition to the role of Executive Chairman of the health & beauty giant.
Brewer will take up the position on 15 March from coffee chain Starbucks, where she is currently Chief Operating Officer. She previously served as President and CEO of Walmart’s Sam’s Club warehouse business from 2012 to 2017 and spent 22 years at Kimberly-Clark. She is also a former director of Amazon, Lockheed Martin and Molson Coors Brewing Company.
Pessina has served as the CEO of WBA for six years following the merger between Walgreens and Alliance Boots in December 2014. He will replace James Skinner as Chairman in March.
