That particular era of Ellingtonia 1940-1942 was one of the most fertile periods for Duke, who wrote and arranged specifically for his musicians, giving them ample room to shine. Baron played in that orchestra 30 years later, both for Duke and then his son Mercer who took over the band upon the 1974 death of his dad.
