It is an indictment of our theater that a playwright who has inspired artists across generations is so little known to the average theatergoer. Sadly, Adrienne Kennedy, the 89-year-old African American dramatic poet, whose 1964 play “Funnyhouse of a Negro” is a touchstone of 20th century American drama, is more revered than she is produced.
Her name provokes rapturous tributes from other writers. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, one of the most talented dramatists to have emerged in the last 10 years, acknowledges the debt he and his contemporaries owe: “Every playwright writing today writes in Adrienne Kennedy’s shadow, full stop.” Years of teaching her plays has shown me how her work quickens the sensibilities of young artists.
TWIST, a virtual experience centered around a rotating series of social strategy games, has announced The Token Tournament. This new endeavor will encompass all public games scheduled for February. Players will be divided into three teams based on a sorting questionnaire that assesses their skills and allegiances. All tokens TWIST s currency earned in February will count towards team totals; prizes for all members of the winning team will be awarded at the end of the month.
The Token Tournament officially launches on Sunday, January 31 at 10pm EST. Players will learn their team assignments during this kickoff event, which will stream live on the TWIST Twitch channel. The Token Tournament will conclude on Sunday, February 28 at 7:30pm EST, with a live-streamed closing ceremony featuring awards and gameplay highlights from the entirety of February. Roger S. Berlind, a member of Princeton’s Class of 1952, former University trustee, Tony Award-winning producer, and a supporter of the arts and humanities at Princeton, died of cardiopulmonary arrest Dec. 18 at his home in Manhattan. He was 90.

“It is with great sorrow and intense gratitude that we honor the life and legacy of Roger S. Berlind,” said Tracy K. Smith, chair of the Lewis Center for the Arts and the Roger S. Berlind ’52 Professor in the Humanities. “Roger s visionary spirit, deep altruism, and abiding generosity have made possible decades worth of art and creation at Princeton. He was also affable and witty. His energy was galvanizing to all of us who had the pleasure to meet him.”
