SCDC reports 42 inmate deaths related to COVID-19

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– As of Monday, the South Carolina Department of Corrections says there have been 42 inmate deaths related to the coronavirus. Officials say the latest death was a 62-year-old inmate from the McCormick Correctional Institution. Authorities say he tested positive on April 19 and died at a hospital on Saturday.
The department says as of Monday, there are no active inmate cases and one active staff case of COVID-19. In total, the department reports 3,252 inmates have tested positive for the virus and 17 cases currently remain active. SCDC says they currently have 15,433 offenders total.
Barnes has been charged with conspiracy to commit a felony and use of communication device in the commission of a felony as well as items prohibited by inmates.
Last month, a 24-year-old man was arrested outside South Carolina’s McCormick Correctional Institution after attempting to toss cannabis and other contraband over a prison fence.
The eight packages included 241 grams of cannabis, 1.4 kilograms of tobacco, as well as six cellphones and chargers and a few other items.
Others have attempted to go a more modern route when it comes to smuggling contraband into prisons, including using drones.
Last year, staff at the Collins Bay Institution in Kingston, Ont. observed a drone delivering a package that contained cannabis, shatter, hash, Xanax and an unknown substance believed to be fentanyl.

FLORENCE, S.C. (WMBF) – A Florence man is accused of conspiring with inmates to help them escape from prison.
South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents and members of the South Carolina Department of Corrections Office of Intelligence and Investigations arrested 23-year-old Dallas Richardson on Thursday.
He is charged with criminal conspiracy.
A warrant affidavit shows that on Dec. 27, 2020, Waiters used a cellphone to communicate with inmates at the McCormick Correctional Institute.
