But it s a hard symptom to measure particularly for the 10 million U.S. children with atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema. They can t always verbalize or quantify their suffering via a survey or scale. It can also be difficult to objectively measure itch for adults with liver disease, kidney disease and certain cancers who experience its symptoms.

Professor Allen Taflove Passes Away | News | Northwestern Engineering

Apr 27, 2021Julianne Hill Allen Taflove, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Northwestern Engineering who conducted pioneering work in the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, passed away at age 71 on April 25, 2021. He will be remembered for his groundbreaking research and dedication to education and advising. Taflove’s roots at the McCormick School of Engineering ran deep, receiving his bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD here. After serving as a researcher at IIT Research Institute, Taflove returned to Northwestern and became a full professor in 1988. In research, Taflove developed fundamental theoretical approaches, algorithms, and scientific and engineering applications of the FDTD method computational solutions of the fundamental Maxwell s equations of classical electrodynamics. He was celebrated by the IEEE, becoming the first fellow for FDTD technique work as well as receiving the group’s Electromagnetics Award. His groundbreaking research has bee

Collaborative research could expedite or eliminate the need to manually adjust bioproduction process

Collaborative research could expedite or eliminate the need to manually adjust bioproduction process Much of common pharmaceutical development today is the product of laborious cycles of tweaking and optimization. In each drug, a carefully concocted formula of natural and synthetic enzymes and ingredients works together to catalyze a desired reaction. But in early development, much of the process is spent determining what quantities of each enzyme to use to ensure a reaction occurs at a specific speed. New collaborative research from Northwestern University could expedite, or even eliminate, the need for scientists to manually adjust bioproduction reaction conditions at all. Using ideas conceived by graduate students across three labs, Northwestern researchers developed technology that allows microbes to produce drugs with feedback control systems, dialing down or amping up protein concentration as needed.

McCormick Student Team Wins DOE Solar Decathlon Design Challenge

The NUHome concept is sustainable and carbon-neutral Apr 22, 2021 // Brian Sandalow The winning NUHome concept, created by a group of 12 undergraduates at the McCormick School of Engineering, includes efficient construction, a future-proof design, and natural light. The Solar Decathlon is a collegiate competition that challenges the next generation of building professionals to design and construct high-performance, low-carbon buildings powered by renewable energy, while promoting student innovation, STEM education, and workforce development opportunities in the buildings industry. The competition included 72 teams from 12 countries, and engiNUity was one of 63 finalists.  The winning NUHome concept, created by a group of 12 undergraduates at the McCormick School of Engineering, includes efficient construction, a future-proof design, and natural light. The sustainable design, which was first named the winner in the Urban Single-Family Housing division, is carbon-neutral and re
