Two area education leaders were recognized for promoting high achievement in schools. Youngstown schools Chief Executive Officer Justin Jennings and Paula Baco, supervisor / interim director of the Trumbull Career and Technical Center, were recognized by High Schools That Work Northeast Ohio for providing leadership and the improvements made in their organizations. The two were recognized for their work to build leadership skills in their respective buildings and districts. “We believe changing adult behaviors will increase student achievement and graduation rates,” Diana Rogers, regional coordinator at HSTWNE, said. Jennings and Baco are among five in the northeast Ohio region to be recognized for their abilities to make significant improvements in their respective areas, using data driven methods.

YOUNGSTOWN The city schools are looking at ways to keep students fully engaged in learning this summer after spending a full year being taught online. The Youngstown City School District will provide a five-week in-person class curriculum available to all students from June 7 to July 9. The summer school programming also will have some fun activities. This program will provide all-day classes for students whether they have failed courses through this pandemic year, fallen behind in their classes or want to be able to participate in programs being co-sponsored by the district and community organizations. The district may provide additional classes through the end of August, even after the five-week program is completed, according to YCSD Chief Executive Officer Justin Jennings.

Each of the candidates incumbent Mayor Jamael Tito Brown, 1st Ward Councilman Julius Oliver and Valley businessman Ryan Kelly has a firm grasp of the problems confronting the city and has outlined realistic and potentially promising solutions to place the city on a path toward stronger fiscal health, more robust business growth and safer streets. This race should not be the last foray into politics for any of them.
