Thomases Family grants $10,000 to JCC | News, Sports, Jobs

YOUNGSTOWN The Thomases Family Endowment of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation granted $10,000 to the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown for Camp JCC scholarships and programming. Funds from the grant will be used to provide scholarships to families who would otherwise be unable to send campers to Camp JCC. It also will be used to expand the repertoire of programming offered to campers, including the addition of a new “Hogwarts” specialty camp, archery for age-eligible campers and camper inclusion support. “This generous grant will allow Camp JCC to continue pursuing its goal of over 56 years: To provide a safe, fun environment for campers to build lifelong friendships through unforgettable adventures and quality care,” Hunter Thomas, director, said.

Mar 1, 2021 YOM HASHOAH: The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation is inviting students in grades 7-12 in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, and western Pennsylvania, to enter its annual Holocaust writing, art and multimedia contest, a project held in conjunction with Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day). To be commemorated this academic year on April 8, Yom Hashoah is an internationally recognized day set aside for remembering all victims of the Holocaust and for reminding society of what can happen to civilized people when bigotry, hatred and indifference reign. The theme for this year’s contest is “Torn From Home,” a reflection on how the enforced loss of a safe place to call “home” is part of the trauma faced by victims of genocide and persecution, and the difficulties survivors face as they try to find new homes and build new lives. Louise Yasinow Shultz 1934-2021 | News, Sports, Jobs

CLEVELAND Louise Yasinow Shultz, 87, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2021, in Cleveland. She was born in Cleveland on Jan. 30, 1934, the daughter of Dr. Aaron B. and Rose Makoff Yasinow. She lived in Warren most of her adult life until she moved to Stone Gardens in Beachwood in 2018. She was a January 1952 graduate of Cleveland Heights High School and a 1956 graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in vocal music education. She was married to Dr. Bernard S. Shultz from 1953 until his death in 2012. Louise was an elementary music teacher in the Warren City Schools for 14 years and a substitute teacher in several school districts. She had a second career of 17 years with the Area Agency on Aging in Youngstown as coordinator of volunteers for the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program. After her retirement, she worked as a caregiver for Comfort Keepers.
