WARREN BDM Warren Steel Holdings LLC, which owns the former Republic Steel and RG Steel property, and the Western Reserve Port Authority have an agreement to donate the large swath of land to the port authority.
“We are going through our due diligence as we speak,” said port authority CEO John Moliterno, who the port authority board in January authorized to negotiate terms of the gift.
The property with a rich steelmaking past is nearly 1,000 acres that stretches almost 2 miles along Pine Avenue SE and includes portions of Warren, Niles, Howland and Warren Township.
The port authority became involved at the urging of JobsOhio, the state’s private nonproft economic development agency.

NILES Just more than two weeks since a councilman at-Large resigned, the Niles City Democratic Precinct Committee appointed newcomer Jimmy Julian to the position by an 8-3 vote Tuesday.
Julian will be sworn in at today’s council meeting at 6 p.m.
“I’m happy with the appointment, and I can’t wait to get to work,” Julian said. “I have big shoes to fill. Ryan McNaughton brought a lot of professionalism and intelligence to the council. We ran against each other in 2019, but since then, I’ve gotten to know him and have an incredible amount of respect for the man.”
WEATHERSFIELD Township trustees voted unanimously to withdraw Weathersfield’s contract with the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber.
The reason for ending the relationship Tuesday came on the heels of former Niles City Councilman Ryan McNaughton being named the chamber’s vice president of governmental affairs.
Although none of the trustees named McNaughton, they referenced his new and former titles and his involvement with annexation legislation.
While two of the trustees were all for withdrawing, vice chairman Marvin McBride said he had reservations about the move.
During a trustees’ meeting, McBride said the board needed to look to the future and see how the decision would affect the township when they are gone. McBride said when dealing with an organization as powerful as the chamber, working with them is more beneficial than working against them.
