BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) Since China made the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt a national strategy, the country has shown firm determination in enhancing the ecological protection of its mother river and facilitating green, sustainable and high-quality development.
The sprawling economic belt covers 11 provinces and municipalities from west to east, with Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and Chongqing in the upper reaches, Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi at the center, and Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai in the lower reaches.
Tuesday marks the fifth anniversary of a landmark symposium on improving the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the first of its kind, chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping. The region is now set to be among the driving forces spearheading the country’s high-quality development in a new era. At a meeting in November .

China s consistent efforts to protect the Yangtze River have helped Asia s longest watercourse turn the corner on conservation, a senior official at the Ministry of Ecology and Environment said.
Xu Chong, head of the ministry s bureau that oversees the river, also said the marked environmental improvement in the waterway has been done in parallel with development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
As a key indicator of the achievement, the Yangtze last year saw the quality of water at all monitored sections in its mainstream rated at Grade II or above. Grade II is the second highest in the five-tier assessment system.
