Thailand hopes Asean centre will start humanitarian assistance in Myanmar soon

BANGKOK, July 13 (Bernama): Thailand hopes Asean Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre) will commence its operation soon to help Myanmar as the country battles its worst Covid-19 outbreak. Thailand s Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanee Sangrat said his country attaches great importance to support efforts to provide humanitarian assistance for the people in Myanmar, in particular in the area of public health. Thailand already donated five million Baht as humanitarian aid, through the Thai Red Cross to the Myanmar Red Cross Society to help Myanmar people who are facing difficulties. At the same time, Thailand has been implementing technical cooperation projects to strengthen Myanmar s capacity in coping with the spread of COVID-19 both in inner areas of the country and along the Thai-Myanmar border.

Thailand seeks end to Myanmar crisis

Thailand seeks end to Myanmar crisis 4 published : 13 Jul 2021 at 04:00 4 Thailand is insisting that it wants to see peace in Myanmar, pledging to work with the international community, especially the Asean Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Centre), to end the conflict there. Neighbouring Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military overthrew its elected government in February. The country is now on the brink of civil war as rebels, including pro-democracy civilian militias and ethnic groups, wage offensives against Myanmar s military junta, or Tatmadaw. According to reports, the Tatmadaw has been increasing attacks in ethnic areas, including near the Thai border, raising concerns that Thailand could face an influx of refugees. More than 700 people have been killed in the conflict.

LETTER | Myanmar - Asean must act to achieve consensus points

LETTER | Myanmar - Asean must act to achieve consensus points Modified4:17 am - LETTER | Last Saturday, April 24, Asean leaders met in Jakarta to discuss the Myanmar crisis, including the junta’s crackdown on civilians since the Feb 1 coup. Asean and Senior Gen Min Aung Hlaing ( arriving for the Jakarta meet above, left) reached a “five-point consensus”, which Myanmar’s pro-democracy activists criticised sharply for its failure to address the human rights violations and post-coup violence. As violence continues in the Southeast Asian country, Asean must now produce a road map that can ensure the return of stability while all parties seek larger and long-term solutions.
