York Museums Trust to receive £423,000 from Government Fund

YORK Museums Trust has announced that it has been awarded £423,226 from the second round of the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund. The funding will enable the trust to reopen the Yorkshire Museum in the summer for the first time since March last year, as well as helping the charity remain financially viable following losses of more than £3 million of income since the start of the pandemic. The trust, which looks after York Art Gallery, York Castle Museum and York St Mary’s as well as the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens, is one of thousands of cultural organisations across the country which has been awarded more than £300 million in the second round of support from the Government.

The proposed changes to the V&A would be catastrophic

The proposed changes to the V&A would be catastrophic By re-organising the museum and favouring chronology over design, Hunt will take away what makes it great 4 March 2021 • 5:00am The V&A is facing one of its most substantial – and perhaps unnecessary – restructurings Credit: Alamy; Byline: AHRC/Steven Heywood Last week, it was revealed that the V&A is considering proposals for a drastic restructuring. Along with a 20 per cent cut in staff, the plans aim to rearrange the museum’s behind-the-scenes curatorial and research departments, a move that threatens to fundamentally change the character of the institution, favouring generalism over specialist expertise, and wasting precious labour and resources at a time when staff are already overstretched.

Selfies (of a sort) have been around for hundreds of years

Painters through the ages often did self-portraits and some went further, showing themselves at work. Take this (sort of) medieval selfie of a 15th century Netherlandish artist (pictured right). Its title: St Luke Drawing the Virgin and Child. It is attributed to the workshop of Dieric Bouts the Elder (c1400-1475), in other words, Bouts’ apprentices.
