PM allots more aid to border

Prime Minister Hun Sen has allotted an additional 1.5 billion riel ($368,000) to four provinces bordering Thailand for support of returning migrants in quarantine.
Meanwhile, more than 7,000 people have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in the first five days of the campaign by the ministries of Health and National Defence.
And in response to instructions from Hun Sen, representatives of the ministries of Justice and Health met on February 16 to review and revise the sub-decree concerning the implementation of health measures at the borders.
Health ministry secretary of state York Sambath announced the provision of new funding, food and other materials for the provinces of Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, and Pailin.

Prime Minister Hun Sen has announced that he will forego seven months of his after-tax salary – from February to August 2021 – and redirect the money to the Ministry of Health to help combat Covid-19.
Meanwhile, the health ministry requested that Phnom Penh municipal and provincial authorities pay close attention to strengthening the implementation of measures to prevent Covid-19 transmission at public gatherings and group events such as weddings and other ceremonies.
The government has provided additional funding and materials to four provinces bordering Thailand in order to supply returning migrant workers currently in quarantine. From December 20 through January 7, a total of 12,088 Cambodian migrants have returned via checkpoints along the Thai border.

Oz to assist with vaccine purchase

The Australian government has pledged to assist Cambodia with the speedy acquisition and equitable distribution of Covid-19 vaccines once they have been certified by the COVAX Facility.
In a statement to The Post on December 24, the Australian embassy said: “Australia welcomes Cambodia’s commitment to only procuring vaccines that are pre-qualified by the World Health Organisation [WHO], a position Australia strongly supports, as it is important for ensuring vaccine safety and efficacy.”
Australian ambassador Pablo Kang met with Minister of Economy and Finance Aun Pornmoniroth on December 23 to discuss Australia’s development cooperation with Cambodia, including plans and procedures for safe access to Covid-19 vaccines.

Utmost caution urged after Covid outbreak in Thailand

Following the Covid-19 outbreak in Thailand’s Samut Sakhon province, Cambodian Minister of Health Mam Bun Heng has urgently advised residents near the border to exercise heightened caution and quarantine all people crossing the border for 14 days.
Bun Heng relayed notification on December 20 that Thai health authorities issued an alert advising regional counterparts of detection of a Covid-19 outbreak in Samut Sakhon that had spread to Bangkok. Over 500 people, mostly Burmese migrant workers, tested positive in a single day, and the Thai government has put the province under lockdown from December 20 to January 3.
